Options/opinions on best to place to mount on a bicycle? Looking for the balance between somewhere I can expect good operation (ie. line-of-sight to sky) vs. out of the way.
I keep coming back to zip-tying the handlebar mount to my handlebars (funnily enough..), works great with the only problem being it takes up a lot of handlebar real estate - quite a chunky setup once the mount is involved - space I'd prefer to be available for lights, bar bag straps, or better still somewhere to put my hands!
Alternatives I've come up with are on top of / hanging from either a bar bag or rear pack, yet both of these end up being fiddly and risk coming loose when going inside the bags, also require changing around depending on what bags I'm taking for a particular trip. I'd prefer a set-and-forget solution.. so I don't forget to take it with me.
I did also experiment with attaching it to the front fork with the same mount - worked well on a few local test rides until I realised when using a front bar bag this would probably affect line-of-sight as it sits beneath.
There's also the school of thought to always keep it on your person - I get the logic for this although don't really want to go down this route myself, each to their own.
Any other ideas?
