InReach Mini connection to Edge 1030 (or similar).

So I have the InReach mini working and tracking and connected OK to my Phone and Garmin/Earthmate app. All good, very happy.

I see I can connect the InReach Mini (via ANT+) to my Garmin Edge 1030 as a 'Sensor' .

Why do this connection? What do I gain from this? Anyone with experience doing this like to comment ...

    Never done it with an Edge. Typically, this connection is intended for use with wearables such as a fenix watch. The connection enables a "remote control" widget on the connected device. This allows you to use the connected device to do things like start/stop tracking, view tracking statistics, read messages, etc.

    I had it parked to my Instinct for a while, but it didn't really add any functionality for me, so I disconnected it.  What I would like to see is an Edge 10XX with built in inReach (and solar).

    Don't know anything about the Edge. The main advantage would be if the Edge has a full virtual keyboard. The Mini uses the vertical "character strip" - so composing or addressing a message is painful. If the remote control device has a better keyboard (the fenix does not), there is an advantage. But mostly it's a matter of not having to drag the Mini out of you pack, or off your shoulder strap, or whatever.

    Edge does not have a keyboard AFAIK, just the endless wheel thingy.  Pair with Earthmate app for keyboard, etc.  Now that's some functionality I can use.  I'm aware of the feature requests link, just added it above because the paired to another device discussion always makes think of how I'd love to see things all in one device, but that's just me maybe.

    I use preset messages to inform others / 'mark' when I have arrived or passed through checkpoints.. having the Mini paired to my Edge (cycling race) or fenix (running) lets me do this without having to reach for the Mini itself, which where I mount it on the bike would involve stopping to reach it, similarly while running as clipped to the back of my pack. Just a few button presses and it's done, much easier than using the mini itself.

    Also handy for the odd glance at the InReach data screen on the Edge/fenix to see the distance and time ticking over to reassure you tracking is still active, again when the Mini itself is not directly in line-of-sight.

    And similarly I guess for reading messages, although I don't generally use it for this myself.

    Finally it's the one time when the "disconnected" message flashing up on your Edge/fenix is actually useful - generally means you've dropped it somewhere! (or deliberately turned it off, or battery dead)
