New InReach Mini fails to Sync with InReach Sync PC software

New InReach Mini fails to Sync with InReach Sync PC software,

It connects fine with Garmin Express. In both cases (using InReach Sync and Garmin Express), the USB cable is connected, of course.

For attempts to sync using InReach Sync, I get the following error. I have tried multiple USB ports, two different computers, and powered everything down and up again multiple times. This is my first experience with this product, and I am needing help resolving this, please!

  • And other times I get the following error:

For reference, the InReach is updated to firmware 3.70 and here's the version of InReach Sync PC software:

  • This may be due to the (not all that) new "improved" ability to sync for f/w update (not for the Mini; for other legacy devices) without logging on (to accommodate devices that have never been activated). Or not.

Since it connects properly with Express, it's probably not the cable. Normally, the timeout errors would suggest an iffy cable. You ight try another one if you have it.

Because the Log Out option is visible, the next thing to try is to Log Out. In my limited experience, it is best NOT to "save credentials" in the desktop sync program. Instead, enter credentials each time.

If logging out and back in does not solve the problem, the conventional wisdom is to remove the sync program and reinstall.

If that does not solve the problem, open a support call. There is a log file which the support folks will want to see. On Windows, you can find it here: "C:\ProgramData\Garmin\inReachSync\sync-log.txt"

Note that the ProgramData folder is normally hidden. The log is text, but is not intended to be read by us mere mortals. That said, you might see something that would give you a hint as to the real problem.

In the meantime, the workaround is to sync via the free Earthmate mobile app.

  • Even though the problem has been going on since yesterday, THIS problem report might be the issue.
