Questions about inReach Mini functionality while in SOS mode

Are there any screenshots/video of SOS mode (on the inReach Mini) or can someone explain how it looks like (beyond the main SOS screen)?

What buttons I will need to press to send a quick text message to GEOS in SOS mode?

And how can I communicate with other contacts while the device is in SOS mode?

Do all other inReach functions work in SOS mode (e.g. can I start/stop tracking/navigating, check weather etc.)? Is SOS screen just an additional thread in a list of message threads or is it an additional page among Messages/MailCheck/Tracking/Location/Weather/ pages?

  • Some of your questions are answered in this Garmin video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEaF2Atxo-s

(All iR devices function essentially the same way in SOS mode, although things like specific buttons and screen navigation differ.)

I believe you can check weather. You can certainly send messages to parties other than GEOS, including SAR once they are involved. Your have limited to no ability to control tracking, which is controlled by the device in SOS mode (since GEOS/SAR depends on an accurate location). The same thing is true of message checking, which occurs frequently and automatically in SOS mode.

It's difficult to characterize SOS mode as a thread or page or whatever. It's really a "mode" which is always in your face while the SOS is in progress. Think of it as a layer "above" screens.

  • Thank you for the answers. I've seen Garmins videos, but wanted to understand the SOS mode better. Your answer clarified some things. Still don't understand why such useful details are missing in the official manual.
