Cannot sync Mini

I cannot get my InReach Mini to sync using either the Earthmate app or the PC program.  Firmware is current.

It connects fine and sends and receives messages without any problems, just won’t sync.

Any help would be appreciated.

Screen shots of error messages:

  • Are you sure that you ARE logged in, and logged in to the correct account? The desktop sync, in particular, has gotten weird since Garmin allowed use of the device without activation. Sync sometimes tries to do things without logging. This is mostly aimed at f/w updates, though. And the Mini gets updates through Express.

Also possible that there was a temporary back end error. How long did you wait before trying again?

  • Thanks for the quick reply.  Logged off then back in, but still no luck using either method, even after waiting a few hours.  I’m now getting different error messages from the iPhone app as shown below.  I’ll wait and try again later today.

  • The timeout error, in particular, suggests a possible cable problem. Try another cable if you have one.

The sync program (not Earthmate AFAIK) writes a debug log on the PC. I can never remember where it lives, tho.

if switching cables does not fix it, call tech support.

  • The log is in ProgramData\Garmin\inReachSync\sync-log.txt.

Not intended for real humans, but it might tell you something. Note that ProgramData is a hidden folder. Log is cumulative. Pay attention to the date stamps.

  • The error message related to syncing contacts is often caused by having duplicate contacts on your account or some other issue with how the contacts were entered. I recommend logging into explore.garmin.com, go to Contacts and make sure there aren't any duplicates and check through your entries for accuracy and to make sure there aren't any extra spaces or characters.

If the error continues, this article has troubleshooting steps worth trying:  Troubleshooting inReach Sync for the inReach Mini

And if it still isn't syncing after that, please contact Product Support for direct assistance -- the sync log file mentioned will likely be requested.

  • I found a duplicate contact.  I removed it and tried a new cable, and now it syncs using both the PC and iPhone app.  Not sure which was the cure.
