When hiking or rock climbing with others I want to give the easiest of instructions. So, do I need to say, "first power on the unit with the button on the top, then push the SOS button" or can I simply say "Push the SOS button"

You can initiate an SOS even if the device is not powered on. Holding down the SOS key for around 5 seconds will force the unit to power on and initiate an SOS request.
Answer is from this FAQ: Activating an SOS with inReach SE+/Explorer+ or inReach Mini
Thank you for this. I searched the FAQs for this topic, but couldn't come up with the correct answer (probably saw that FAQ it is noted in, but didn't look at it in detail thinking the answer might be generic to SOS and not answer this specific question).
This is what I was hoping the answer would be, so very pleased that Garmin included this functionality. Now telling folks that I climb/hike with what they would need to do is simple as can be expected.! Loving the device so far.
Great! I'll close this thread, please post again if you have other questions.
