Can Presets send Lat/Lon

Hello

Can the preset messages be designed to send the lat/lon? And i believe I am correct that these are 'free' in the plans

Kind of guessing that this option can only be used on the paid sms messages.

I've tried looking at the Earthmate app, but you need a device first. Seems a shame that they don't allow a demo option so that you can see how suitable it is.

I am torn between the Explorer+ and the mini.

thanks

  • All messages carry location info. AFAIK, the inclusion of location info in the resulting SMS is based on the setting on the account tab on your explore.garmin.com account not the message type.

The difference among message types: presets have both message text and recipients profiled on the web site - you cannot change either from the device; quick text have profiled message but you determine recipients on the device; you determine both message and recipients for regular messages on the device.

Explorer+ vs. Mini. Both are legacy devices - not full participants in the Garmin ecosystem. Explorer+ has mapping, Mini does not. However maps are legacy DeLorme cartography. Anecdotally, Explorer+ appears to acquire and hold a fix better than the Mini. Both use the legacy Earthmate app rather than the new improved Explore app.

if you want a full member of the Garmin ecosystem, you would need either the 66i or the brand new 7x0i. 66i has hard buttons and permanently installed battery like all earlier iR devices. 7x0i is touch, has swappable battery pack. But it weighs a ton, so might not be the best choice if you back pack.

  • Many thanks, after much more digging i have come to the same conclusion about the presets. Nice to have the location included. And a few special sms messages to use if i'm running late or having minor issues.

Weight/size is an issue which is why i might stick with the mini. The topo cartography on the + is 'OK' and as you say not garmin. Not sure there is anything extra i really need (compass, barometer etc).

    Thanks again for your advice
