You cannot use MapShare ... message delivered to iR

23rd Jul I received to my iR MINI message: from: [email protected] You cannot use MapShare until you give consent at explore.garmin.com to post your data online.

What is it? Why I got it? Actually MapShare was activated and many time used for sharing my location with Presets early, I didn't deactivate it.

  • The whole Garmin eco-system has been either offline or flaky for quite some time.  I don't remember exactly when it started, but the web sites were affected. If you are still having the problem, first check to be sure that MapShare is set up and properly authorized on your account. Then sync the device (wired sync if possible). If the problem persists after that, call tech support.

  • Thank you for advice!

It seems all settings for iR and iR related web services still the same as it was prior to outage. Also it seems everything working fine now.

But I am wondering to know what was the reason Garmin iR related infrastructure sent me this message?

  • July 23 is the day that Garmin was hacked. As far as I know, the inReach parts of the infrastructure continued to work. But various other parts, including the Explore web site and anything connected to Garmin single-signon, were offline for quite some time. This might be the result of the iR side not being able to check with the Explore/MapShare side to see if MapShare was enabled.

You can try asking tech support, but I doubt that you're going to get an authoritative answer on it.

  • it seems you are correct again, I am asking tech support right now (I can't do it early as chat service didn't work previous days for me) and ... I am getting very tricky answers like you need to agree to T&C, then something like probably T&C was changed and you need to agree one more time, then after some ummm silly verbal ping pong finally I got answer "The message may have been an error due to some recent issues we've had....
