Waypoints are updated via Iridium

Today I discovered (and repeated as controlled experiment) that Waypoint(s) are created / edited by iR MINI updated on MapShare and on the map on explore.garmin.com via Iridium.

Probably, you have noticed pointed up arrow (communication indicator) which appears on the screen immediately when Waypoint is created or edited.

Interestedly, but it doesn't work in the opposite way, ie Waypoints are created by explore.garmin.com or Earthmate app are NOT synced with iR MINI via Iridium.

Probably it is well know functionality, and probably it works for other iR products, but it was absolutely new for me.

Also it can be used as additional communication way in case your MapShare is shared with some friends, and new Waypoints with descriptive names (max is 20 symbols) can give them extra info re your trip.

This functionality exists on legacy devices and the Mini. It has been removed from newer devices beginning with the 66i. This is also true of the "navigation events", which are discussed in another thread. Navigation events are sent by legacy devices and the Mini, but not by the 66i.

Actually it is very cool as 'old' devices send this data over Iridium with no additional costs for end-users. Of course it can be NOT cool for Garmin (as a Company) or Iridium, depends who pay for each byte of data.
