What is it for or how is the option "Show waypoints created in the field on MapShare" used?

That option is at explore.garmin.com > Social > MapShare settings.

I haven't been able to find out what it is for. I have tried to mark a Waypoint with inReach and it is not shown in MapShare.

I only see that they can be shown if I add them to a collection that is shared on MapShare, but that also happens with any Activity, Track... etc. I don't see why there is a specific option for those Waypoint elements

  • At one time, iR devices could (optionally) send waypoints marked in the field and "navigation events" (things like starting a route, I think) via satellite to the Garmin servers. The data was sent via the Iridium network in more or less real time. Over time, this feature has slowly disappeared from newer devices. I would guess that this MapShare setting refers (only) to whatever devices still do this.

For devices which do not support this feature, I suspect that WayPoints added to MapShare-visible collections appear on MapShare ONLY after a sync. Not in near real-time.

  • Indeed :) it seems that it is something that does not correspond to the Mini 2, for example, and it is confusing.

And yes I have verified that it appears in MapShare if we add it to a published collection in MapShare.
