If I turn MapShare off, do I lose my data

I'd like to temporarily disable MapShare . . . . but I'm wondering if the existing tracks / routes / waypoints will disappear permanently?

I do not think that any data is lost. MapShare is simply a way to display (or not) information which has otherwise been uploaded to the Garmin servers.

That said, I am not sure what happens to messages which were addressed ONLY to MapShare.

The other option is to add a password to MapShare (or change the existing password). The makes the page inaccessible to those without the new password. And it does not involve disabling MapShare.

To be absolutely certain, open a support ticket.

Just finished a chat with support on this - anything visible on MapShare is saved to your account, so having MapShare on or off does NOT affect the data - just the visibility.

The data is there until (and unless) you delete it.
