InReach receiving Preset Message from another InReach user free?

Hi all,

Prospective Garmin InReach user here. I have a friend who has an inReach. We split up on a recent snow-shoe expedition, and he got concerned when I didn't arrive back at the car by a certain time. If I had my own inReach device and sent his inReach device a Preset Message saying something like, "I'm fine! Enjoying the shoe'ing," would that count as one of his 10 included (or billable) messages on his Safety plan? Or would it be free?

The Garmin InReach Messaging FAQ says that sending Preset Messages is free for me, the sender... it doesn't describe what happens when the receiver is an inReach user...

Normally, every message sent OR received by a given device is chargeable. The single exception (AFAIK) is that preset messages are free for the SENDER. They are not free for the recipient.

Confirmed. Receiving presets is like any message, so it's costing you one to get it.

MSMS Hello, preset messages are free as outgoing messages. Incoming replies would count towards your monthly allotment of messages. Preset messages are the only "free" messages being sent from the device…

Thanks... I am guessing that's the case too. I'll have to test this if/when I get an InReach.

MSMS Hello, preset messages are free as outgoing messages. Incoming replies would count towards your monthly allotment of messages. Preset messages are the only "free" messages being sent from the device other than the 5 free test messages.
