InReach to InReach Communication

If I meet someone in the backcountry and we exchange InReach messages and put them in our respective devices, can we then immediately send messages back and forth to each device? Or do we have to sync the new contact before the devices will send and receive the messages?

You should always be able to reply to a received message. No sync required.

Also, if you know the user’s inReach address (the thing that looks like an email address - [email protected]), you can type it manually as a recipient when you send a new message.

The point of syncing contacts is that the inReach address won't use up more than one character of message space, instead of the entire address being counted off of the limit.
