GPSMap 86i (InReach not Charging)

Hi Guys

I struggled to find the ideal group for this - sorry if it’s in the wrong one.

We’ve had a GPSMap 86i for about 6 months now. We’ve always had it in the cradle and charged through USB on the cradle. Last week we noticed the device knew it was plugged in but it was not charging. The battery gradually drained. The device is now dead and no method of charging (various USB direct or through the cradle, different adapters, in the car, home, etc). I’ve tried everything.

Has anyone got any ideas? This device is our life line on the boat.

Cheers

Tom

  • You've done the conventional wisdom stuff. Trying different charging sources, different cables, etc. You might want to try a USB connection to a PC just to see if the presence of a data connection (in addition to charging voltage) makes any difference.

If not, you'll probably need to open a support ticket.

You COULD try a factory reset. Unlikely to be possible if it is drained flat, though. I think this sequence works for the 86i. https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=Z41VbtQ1EH7F4wmdm0hfE6

Be aware that this will delete all user data on the device. And you will have to repeat the outdoor portion of activation.

  • Thanks - I called up support and they’ve swapped it out for a new device. I didn’t have any hope it could be fixed, they were very quick to sort it all out. I always find them very good like that. Full instructions on how to migrate subscriptions from the old to new device also very useful.
