Unable to edit own contact on GPSMap 86i/Garmin Explorer

I’ve just tried testing our InReach message from a GPSMap 86i. I used myself to test SMS. Nothing came through. I checked the contact and it has the country code in there twice (+4444…). There’s no way to edit this in the device or Garmin explorer. Anyone know how this can be changed. It was not user error setting it up. My guess is some web page in the process adding based on country code selected.

  • You should be able to edit this on the explore.garmin.com website. If you are talking about your OWN contact (the one associated with the device), you do this on the Account tab, not the Contacts tab. Remember to sync after making the change.

I have never been able to figure out whether or not to enter the country code (with the plus sign) in the phone number field. Every time I have to edit one of these, I just mess around with the number and the country code until the displayed number includes the +, the country code, and the number. And the country code in the number box matches the one I selected in the drop-down. That's the way it's supposed to be.

  • Thanks for your input. I have just found that and the contact information is correct (although I've not changed it). So I am going to make the assumption your suggestion about syncing has not taken place (although one has to question how the other contacts are all on there). Typical the device is on the boat, not close to hand right now. At least I know where to change it now!

  • Well I had high hopes for this being the solution considering my account had the +44 and the country code set, so I deleted the +44 and replaced with a 0 and, saved and ran  the sync through Garmin Express but it's still showing +4444... on the device. Any other ideas? I tried doing the sync a couple of times.

I am considering a factory reset but am worried I'll lose the charts and subscription I paid to activate.

  • Just called up Outdoor support at Garmin, very quick response time and excellent person on the end of the call. Offered the same advice as above, update the contact and sync (which we did) and still no luck. Then I tried to sync through the Explore iOS app rather than the desktop Garmin Express and the contact was updated.

So anyone else coming across this thread, this is the solution:

    1. Update the contact in your account on explore.garmin.com

    2. Pair the device with your phone

    3. Complete a sync using the Garmin explore app

I think there is assumption that the app is used more often than not, I tend not to because of the amount of junk it then syncs from my Fenix to the GPSMAP.

  • This is by design. Garmin Express DOES NOT sync anything from the Explore universe. You must use the appropriate sync channel for Explore data. Depending on the device, this might be a wired sync via the desktop Sync app (legacy devices), the Earthmate app (legacy devices), or the Explore mobile app (current devices).

Note that the channel for firmware updates may not be the same channel as Explore data.

Some devices treat logged (as opposed to sent) tracks as "activities". In this case, Garmin Connect Mobile might upload the activity to Connect, but it will not sync anything else in either direction.

Yeah, I know. Nobody can keep track.

  • And yet the device shows up in Garmin Express, has sync functionality and tells you the sync has completed... how foolish of me to think that it had!

  • Unfortunately, sync means different things to different parts of the eco-system. Everybody is confused. But there is nothing to be done about it. A lot of this has to do with continued support of legacy devices. At the other end of the spectrum, newer iR devices have full Garmin handheld functionality, which means that they participate in both Explore universe (iR) and the Connect universe (activities).
