when should you use SOS?

I'm in the UK, and plan on doing day walks. I know the UK has good cell reception, but thinking of getting an inreach mini as reassurance.

I have no intention of going beyond my means, but if injured at what point should you hit that SOS button, and are you able to state the urgency (helicopter, mountain rescue on foot or normal ambulance service)?

Thanks

  • IMO, you should only use SOS when you would call 911 (in the US - I assume the UK has a similar emergency number) for immediate assistance. I have seen people who claim it's OK to use it because you have a flat tire on your car. I disagree, but I believe that GEOS will dispatch appropriate assistance if you use it that way.

When you engage SOS, the unit goes into a special SOS mode. You will be placed in an interactive conversation with GEOS dispatch. You can and should state the nature of your emergency and the level of assistance required. However, GEOS will make the decision as to what services (SAR, helicopter, ambulance to your location, or whatever) based on your location and the nature of your emergency. I suppose you can suggest, but GEOS will make the final decision. In part, this is because GEOS knows what services are available at that location.
