IRm False Location Points?

Has anyone ever seen an In-Reach device send location reports with a "stale" location? Unit is set to extended tracking mode and 10 minute intervals. Several times we've had it repeatedly report track points in a clump for as much as 24 hours, as if the user was stationary or nearly so, then jump to a new location and report a clump of points there (not necessarily catching up to the actual location in the process).

We've also had a location track point show up on Share that the device had never been near, as though it was reporting someone else's location.

  • I would suspect that off-track location was generated while the unit had no fix, or had a very poor quality fix. In extended tracking mode, this is more  likely - which is not to say that it's OK.

Clumped points would also be (somewhat) expected, but not for 24 hours at a time. And they would tend to be clumped around the locations at which the unit "woke up".

Both of these things seem to suggest that the unit is having trouble acquiring a fix at the appointed times.

What model inReach is this? It does matter since the extended tracking/expedition mode behavior varies by device.

I have seen lags in position in these modes with various devices. However, I have never seen the particular behaviors you describe. A call to tech support is probably in order.

Note that if the firmware on the device is not up to date, updating would be the first step.

  • Thanks, its and InReach Mini, and I updated the firmware prior to the beginning of each expedition.

In the current instance the user reported that the unit was not turning off and the battery was running down quickly. I was able to talk them through the settings and found that Ext Mode had turned off, possibly when I updated the firmware. We turned it on again and set the tracking interval to 30 minutes instead of 10. We'll see what happens, but so far it's behaving better.
