Not getting messages unless I send one

As the title indicates, I have had several instances recently where I will 'force' a message check and not get anything.  I am expecting one.  I wait and try again.  Nothing received.  I decide to send a message.  As soon as it leaves, several other messages come flying in.  I have not moved my location from a clear sky.  I love my inReach, but have been having send/receive issues a lot lately.  Some are 'explained' when I get home and see the system was down blah blah, but I'm losing faith in this device.  Anybody else having this issue recently or have any suggestions?  Appreciate any positive advice. Thanks.

  • An active message check is part of every send, whether it’s a message or a sent track point. This SHOULD be the equivalent of the manual mail check. That said, there are differences, especially for newer devices. Cannot speak to the specifics of a device as old as the SE.

in particular, newer devices enter a conversational mode when you send a message. In that mode, the device does a frequent mail check for 10 to 20 minutes after the send. That’s as opposed to the normal 1 hour interval. So you should see a prompt reply to your message more quickly than normal.

Are you sure that the manual message check completes? That can take some time.

There are lots of possibilities here, including possible hardware issues with the device. A call to tech support may be in order.

  • twolpert,

Thanks.  It seems a call to tech support may be in order.  I realize this unit is getting a bit older, but there is no benefit in upgrading as it is basically just a newer package with the same things. I will report back if I hear anything useful from tech support.
