Splitting path into segments of 200 points

Hi,

I'll be walking a trail about 1200km and the gpx file I have has around 18,000 points. I know I can split the file manually but I'd rather not do it manually with that many points. Is there any software available that will let me load the main file and automatically split the file into multiple files with 200 points each?

Cheers.

I find it absurd that Garmin limits you to 200 points per route and doesn't provide an easy efficient tool to help you split your file....

  • Offhand, I don't know of anything to help with this. However, depending on the topology of the trail segments, you might try the following. When you import a track into the Explore web site as a route (as opposed to importing it as a track), it will automatically "thin" the points for you. The result may or may not be suitable for actual use. For example, if the segment covers a lot switchbacks (and you need to follow them), this isn't going to work. On the other hand, if the segment fairly straight, or has only a few sharp turns, this will work fine. So what you might try is to manually separate the the file into manageable segments, then import each as a route and see what you get.

Depending on the specific iR unit, you might also be able to make use of the raw track rather than turning it into a route. For example, the 66i is capable of following a track on the unit itself. It is also capable of displaying the track on the map where you can follow it graphically. On the other hand, the Mini cannot follow anything other than a route - and has no map display at all.

I've worked out how to do it but you need a computer running linux. A combination of https://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/193168/how-to-split-a-gpx-track-file-into-several-files-of-n-trackpoints-each and https://www.gpsbabel.org/ splits the file into multiple gpx files with 200 (or however many you need) points.

  • There are any number of free and paid applications that will split tracks, create routes, and limit points to 200.  Available for Windows and Apple.  Two that I use are RTWTool and GPSBabel.  Both tools have other useful  options for filtering and exporting.
