Sending Mapshare and Messages

I have an older generation Explorer. When I want to Mapshare or text a message to a contact in my contact list there are three icons next to the names - SMS, an envelope, and a left/right arrows. What is that left and right arrow selection for?
  • Been a while since I looked at the Explorer. But in general, the third option for an address is an inReach device. You will see an icon (or a separate address list entry - I forget which) for each type of address which you have for that contact.

Here is a picture. Where will the message go if I select the double arrows?ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1455198.jpg
  • That contact has an inReach device address stored. Assuming that the contact actually HAS an inReach and that the stored address is correct, the message goes direct to the device. Delivery will be delayed if the device is off or otherwise out of touch with the satellite network.

By "direct" I mean that the message lands on the target inReach, rather than on a phone (SMS) or in an email account. "Direct" does not bypass the Garmin servers. The full path is still your device > Iridium constellation > Iridium ground station > Garmin servers > Iridium ground station > Iridium constellation > the other device.
