Stop Showing All Tracks at Once

I got in InReach Mini so my family can check up on my location while I’m hiking. But when they access my shared map URL from a mobile device, it shows all my previous routes at the same time. So if I’m doing the same hike for the third or fourth time, it will just be a mess of dots and lines, with no way to tell what direction I’m going. Is there a way to change that? They can click a dot to see the timestamp for that location reading, but the data is still pretty hard to interpret. It would be better if it only showed the current track, or if it had a way to select tracks.

When viewed in a desktop browser, it’s a little better. All the tracks are still shown, but there is a menu to select individual tracks. The selected track shows in a slightly different color. It's still pretty hard to make sense of the data with all the previous tracks still displayed.

I’m hoping there’s a setting to change this, and if not, I’d like to submit a feature request.
  • Learning how to use the system myself. An alternative to what TrippyZ recommended is what I've done: I created an Archive collection and moved my old tracks there. That way, only the most current/active track is being shown on MapShare. You need to make sure the Archive collection is not shown on MapShare: Social tab -> Filter MapShare data -> select which collections are to be made visible.
  • I did see the Filter Mapshare Data button, which can hide tracks before a defined date, or show only selected collections of tracks. However, both options would require me to log in regularly to update the date, or move tracks into a collection. It would be nice to see only the current or most recent track without this constant manual maintenance.

I also now see that on the desktop version of the website, the map page has a Map Filters tab with options to show Currently Tracking or Most Recent Track. But I don't see a way to access those options from a mobile device, which shows a much simplified map interface. I hoped that by setting a filter from the desktop, that setting would carry over to the mobile view, but no such luck.
  • IIRC, it's possible to get to the desktop version from a mobile device (via the circle-i icon on the mobile screen). However, the result is virtually unusable on a phone. Might be OK on a tablet, I guess. It also leaves a cookie which is difficult to remove, at least on Apple devices. (Requires you to use Settings app to get to Safari settings. You can either take a really big hammer and remove all your cookies, or you can use the Advanced options to remove just those from garmin.com - assuming you can find it in the huge list.) You're stuck with the desktop version until you do that.
  • I have experienced a similar issue apparently. It's been almost a year since I used Mapshare, and it took a little exploration to get settings properly (I think) with the new features. I have an Explorer and tracks/waypoints/routes going back to 2015. I moved them all to an Archive Collection, and set up a new collection, called Default. I made the Default collection the default in the Plans and Devices tab. In the Mapshare filters, I set a date equal to today and to show ONLY the Default Collection. When I go to share.garmin.com/.../<username> I see all collections and all information from all dates, including messages. As if the Mapshare filters have no effect. I'm going to sleep on it, as it might take a while for the changes to take place back on the server. Thought I'd toss out my experience for others to ponder while I sleep. I really like the idea of collections, but this has me stumped.
  • Make sure that you log out of your inreach.garmin.com account before you try to check MapShare. It appears to me that MapShare "knows" that you're logged in and that you own the MapShare page. As a result, it appears to ignore the filters that you've set for the general public.

I assume this is a "feature", not a bug. But it really does make it difficult to test your MapShare settings as they would be seen by your friends.
  • twolpert, you are an inReach whisperer! Interestingly I had deleted all cookies and browsing history, thinking there must be something it was picking up. That forced me to log out of inreach.garmin.com, but apparently I didn't hit the magic combination last night after several hours of attempts. Five minutes this afternoon after your advice and expected behavior is obtained, simply by logging out. As a validation I was able to reproduce my problem, and resolve it by logging out again. I find Garmins written documentation a little better than DeLorme, but this little nugget would be a really useful note in the Mapshare settings. Thanks!
