Preset message 90 minute delay

Just activated the inReach mini and was testing it out. Sent a preset and it took 90 minutes to receive it on iPhone 8 on ATT. Seems absurd. The message sent right away and showed up on the website right away. Is this an ATT issue or a Garmin translating the preset into an actual SMS message issue?
  • hmmm, re-ran one today and it went through immediately. Now I have no idea what to expect.
  • Lots of moving parts in that scenario. iR to Iridium satellite, to Iridium ground station (possibly via mesh networking among satellites), to Garmin servers, to SMS gateway (contracted, not Garmin facility), to cell network, to your cell provider, to your phone. Some of those links are via public Internet. The most frequent cause of delays is difficulty transmitting from the device to the Iridium satellite.

If you saw it in the Inbox on the inreach.garmin.com web site, it reached the Garmin servers. Once it reaches the SMS gateway, it's out of Garmin's hands. The status board does not indicate any recent outages in SMS services. Quite a while back (four or five months?), there were unexplained problems specific to AT&T. Never did see anything definitive on resolution, but have not seen any recent posts (other than yours) reporting problems.

In general, SMS messages (preset or otherwise) are dispatched promptly. Usually shows up on the phone in under 5 minutes (from the time it was actually transmitted by the inReach device). That said, it's not unusual to see delays of under 15 minutes. 90 minutes is an unusually long time.
  • Now nothing is working lol. Ones I sent last night and this morning haven't come through. Social tab is missing from in reach website. Can't seem to do anything but send a test email. Fun!
  • mad_hungarian Could you please contact Garmin's support teams so we can get some information from you? When you talk to the agent, please let them know you are experiencing both missing replies and also the missing Social Tab since we are looking into both issues currently.
