Send interval vs Log Interval

Hello, I have the safety plan. If I Log every 5min and Send my track every hour. Do I pay only $0.10 every hour or do I pay the number of track logged so $0.60 since I am sending 6 logged waypoints. Sorry if this question has been asked before. Thanks.
  • Please read what I posted over here:
    https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/inreach/inreach-mini/1392852-tracking-function?p=1393124#post1393124

Basically with your settings it’s going to send one single point per hour. The log points won’t get to your account until either:
    1) you do a wired sync (USB cable)
    2) you sync through the Earthmate app (WiFi or cellar)
  • Sent points go via the Iridium network. They are always counted against your plan. If you have a plan with a limited number of included track points, you will pay separately for any overage.

Logged points (sometimes known as activity tracking, depending on your device) NEVER transit the Iridium network. They do not show up on the web (for example, the Map tab at explore.garmin.com or your MapShare page) until you sync. Some devices sync via a mobile app (Earthmate or Explore). Some sync only via a wired USB connection and the desktop sync program. Logged points never count against your plan. So you do not pay for them.

  • Right thanks so Send Interval is the charge point not Log Interval? (the app terminology) and your previous answer suggest Log (breadcrumbs) are only updated at device sync? This is really so confusing - even the service guy on the phone couldnt explain it !

So if my Log Interval is 5 minutes and my Send Interval is 30 minutes I am charged for 2 points every hour? (putting aside all other 'track points' like stop moving notifications)

    My invoice says:

    • Tracking points have a charge for each point.
    • Tracking points refer to the individual "breadcrumbs" sent by the inReach at user-selected intervals ranging from 10 minutes to 4 hours

    But the webpage https://support.garmin.com/en-AU/?faq=QK8DnECaKb0JVz1ep2zKI6 says:

Send/Track Points: Location data gathered by the inReach and transmitted to your MapShare page for others to view. For more details see - Garmin Explore Web Help - Social

    • NOTE: With the Basic plan, there is an additional cost per point (varies by currency). As an example, if your send interval is set to 30 minutes and you had tracking on for 1 hour, you would be charged for 2 track points

In GPS parlance 'breadcrumb' = tracking point. The invoice notes suggest Tracking points are charged.

Garmin really needs to start using common terminology across all platforms !!

  • I reread this thread and I think your last sentence answered my question thank you very much: "Logged points never count against your plan. So you do not pay for them."

Using the Earthmate app settings, or directly in the device:

Log Interval = not charged - and may only show up in your map when you sync back via Earthmate or USB.

Send Interval = charged for each single contact with Iridium service. This may also include automated system contacts such as when you stop moving.

e.g. A Log interval of 5 minutes with a Send Interval of 30 minutes will generate up to 3 Chargeable notifications over 1 hour. (inclusive of a 'Stop Moving' notification)

The 5 minute breadcrumbs stored in your device will only update to your map when synced and will never result in a charge.

Which leaves one question - Does a 'Stop Moving' notification enter into Log Interval or is always sent over the Network ?

Imagine if Garmin could just write the above in their FAQ instead of using various interchangeable terms like Tracking point, breadrumb, Log Interval and Send Interval.
