Sending SMS Problem

Trying to send an SMS to a friend in Florida using my inReach.
- AT&T
- He never receives the SMS messags
- Sending an SMS to his wife's phone in the same room works fine (also AT&T)
- Sending message as an e-mail to his e-mail address works fine.

But SMS messages to his phone number never get through. I can see the messages on my Garmin web account. Is there a way to see if those messages were actually sent??

We checked his phone for blocked numbers but didn't see the incoming number shown on his wife's phone.

SMS messages to my AT&T phone in Arizona work fine.

Thanks,
  • Thanks, Volker. Showing up on status page now as well. Subscription is nice, but it's no more up to date than the status page as far as I can tell.
  • I can confirm that on March 12, 2019, a contact of mine whose provider is ATT did not receive SMS messages. Garmin support is aware but has no idea how long it will take to fix it. BTW--I should have known the messages were failing, because the message box on my inReach showed an icon of a little X in a circle.
  • AFAIK, nothing on your inReach measures end to end message delivery. At worst, it reflects delivery to the Iridium constellation. At best, it reflects delivery to the Garmin servers. And I doubt very much that it goes as far as the best case.
  • I just set up my new inReach Mini, and have sent test messages out via text to three different friends - NONE were received. One on Verizon, one on T-Mobile, one on Project Fi.
I also sent an email message, which was received.

I've called customer service about it, I guess we'll see if they're able to fix this one. I'm pretty disappointed in my new toy. In theory this shouldn't affect SOS services... but it definitely makes me trust the device a lot less, if I can't send a single text message right off the bat.
  • Well, glad to see I'm not crazy. Thanks Volker.

  • The update from Garmin on the 13th was, "Update - We are continuing to monitor for any further issues" . Not sure what they mean by further issues as the service has never restored for me. Email works but not SMS to AT&T phones. Has anyone got the AT&T SMS capability back?
  • Call support again. In the case of SMS failures, I am pretty sure the "continuing to monitor for any further issues" really means "waiting for complaints to die down". From what little I know about the gears, I doubt that Garmin knows what happens to the message once they hand it off to the SMS gateway. So if it got handed off and no humans complain, it must be working :-D
  • The latest feedback from Support is that they verified ATT's spam filters are rejecting SMS messages that contain clickable map links. The temporary work around is to uncheck the option to "Include a link to an online map with my location." under SMS Message Configuration (bottom right) on your Account page. Your location is still available via Mapshare and the link can be sent via email. SMS to ATT phones now works for me after unchecking the option and resynching inReach.

I also edited my Preset messages to send both an SMS and email to the designated recipient. The email contains the link, the SMS does not, but the receiving party now gets both.
  • Having the same issue here, no texts are being received by ATT contacts but Verizon works just fine. Definitely not thrilled about this.
  • Took a quick look at status notification emails for the last week. No mention of AT&T specifically (that I saw). I'd call support again.
