Help Exporting Logged Points From Device (1min interval)

Hello,

I'm trying to access/download my logged track points (1min interval) but after reading through these message boards for a couple of hours I still haven't found a clear path. Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

Device: Garmin inReach Explorer
Plan: Freedom Expedition

I recently got back from a month long off-road cross-country motorcycle trip where I set my inReach Explorer+ to log at 1 min intervals and tracking at 10 min intervals. The online map is showing the 10 min tracking intervals just fine - this makes sense since this is my tracking interval that I'm assuming was sent from the device throughout my trip. From what I understand, if I sync my device, the additional Log Points (my plan calls these "track points") should show up on the map where I can then export the more granular track into a GPX file (please correct me here if I'm mistaken here)

The online map is showing track points every 10 minutes - and my home page lists 1,352 tracking points sent. According to napkin math: Roughly 10 hours of riding per day over 21 days should be around 12,600 points at 1 min log interval.

After syncing my device using the windows sync tool and expecting to see all the Track points (1 min interval) nothing has changed and I'm still limited to the 10 minute tracking points displayed on the map.

Am I doing something wrong here? Assuming I'm not able to sync the device to get the granularity I need is there really no way to export the data directly off the device so I can create a GPX file?

Please let me know if I'm missing something here and thanks again for any insight here.
  • You're not doing anything wrong. A wired sync should move the logged points from the device to the web site. From the web site, you can export to .gpx or .kml.

There is currently no way to export the points directly from the device. The only option is to sync with the web site and export form there. The inReach devices are not yet fully integrated with the Garmin ecosystem. Other Garmin software, such as BaseCamp, cannot talk to the inReach.

As far as the count on the Home tab at inreach.garmin.com, that reflects only "sent" points - the points that were sent via the Iridium network. "Logged" points are never sent by satellite. They are sent only via sync. You can use either a wired sync (which is apparently what you did) or a wireless sync via the free Earthmate app (assuming your device is paired with your phone, you have the app, and you have Internet connectivity from the phone). It is not necessary to have the app, or to have the app running, at the time the points are logged. You can do the wireless sync at any time. You do need to be sure that the app is logged into your account.

There are occasional issues with the web site, both (apparently) in terms of sync itself and in terms of displaying logged points. One thing you can try is to use a different PC and/or browser to access inreach.garmin.com. This eliminates possible problems with the browser cache. Or you can flush the cache in whatever browser you use. If that does not help (and it probably won't), you can try the wired sync again. And/or try a wireless sync with the Earthmate app.

If none of that helps, you're probably going to have to call Garmin support.
