Track management on the inReach website

Hi there,

I'm a new inReach user, I purchased a Mini 3 weeks ago to help me bike pack the Colorado Trail this summer. So far, I've been happy with the device and everything that comes with it. But I must say I've been puzzled by a couple of things, mostly related to track management in the inReach website and MapShare. I've been a long time user of Garmin Connect, and I find that understanding the inReach logic is painful at times.

Couple of quick questions:
1/ Why are there 2 tracks showing on the map for the same ride? I'm just doing one ride, so I'm expecting one track. Instead I get 2, one that's pretty detailed with a bunch of points; the second one much sloppier with less resolution. I've been searching around a lot and watched all the videos; it's possible that those are coming from the log vs. send intervals. I'm set for 1mn log and 30mn send; but even if that's the case, I still don't understand the need for 2 different tracks. It's confusing, clutters my map; and makes my MapShare difficult to read.

2/ I created a route using CalTopo, which I find much more complete and easier to use to create routes than the inReach mapping tool. There was a big loss of resolution when I imported the route in inReach, which I regret - 200 waypoints for a 100 miles route in the CO backcountry makes for a sloppy route. inReach eventually created the route, but also assumed that I rode that course and created a track a well. Why is that?

I must point out, in case someone at Garmin is listening, that I've read the manuals, searched the support site and watched the webinars. They all do a great job explaining what is possible to do; however they don't really explain HOW to do it. Would love to actually get a webinar from Chip Noble that just does not assume the watchers are all familiar with inReach and details the new features. It would be great to see how to actually navigate the inReach website.

Massive thank you to anyone willing to offer some advice -

The track with the straight lines is pretty obvious. That's the waypoint to waypoint track. The other one is your actual ride. The 200 waypoint limitation has been a long time thorn.

Thanks for the answer. I guess it makes sense; yet I'm still not sure why another track is generated between the waypoints - is there a reason? I know there should be waypoints, but why is there a need for a second, sloppier track that's going to clutter my map and make it look like I did that ride twice?

Also, I did not create any of those waypoints. I knew the route on this ride and did not map it our in advance. I just used the inReach as a tracking device.

Is there an option to disable that feature?
  • Your initial thought that this is the logged points VS sent points is correct.
This is a known bug which should be addressed soon and causes the two lines to split. Once resolved and working as intended, you will see the sent points only until the logged points get synced at which point the lines merge together.

Any ideas when this will be fixed? I just finished my first multiday trip with the mini and had the same issue. My overall mileage was correct, I'm assuming because they used the logged points to calculate. My daily mileages, however, were completely inaccurate, as it looks like they were calculated using sent points (which I have at 20 min). Also, I did a little side spur at one point. There is a sent point on that bit, but no logged points (I could see logged points but no sent points, but don't understand how sent points with no logged points is possible). Any insights? Thanks
