Map Routes

I've spent the last hour creating a route using the web interface. inreach.garmin.com/Map.

Anyone know how to edit a route once its created? Somehow, I keep exiting out of creating new waypoints and then the only thing I can do is delete the last waypoint on the route or end the route by double clicking on the last waypoint to close the route.
  • I have a not easy method that might work. If nobody posts an easier solution, I'll offer mine later today, but before the opening kick off.
  • I guess easy is in the eye of the beholder. What's easy for the web developer isn't so easy for us mere mortals. Was unable to find any documentation on this, so what's below is the result of previous trial and error.

To edit an existing route, select it in the left sidebar and make sure it's visible on the map. Click anywhere on the route line. This opens a small pop-up box. Click the Pencil icon in the upper right corner of the box. This will display the points you originally placed on the route (bright white boxes) along with a "handle" between each pair of original points (light gray semi-transparent boxes). I'm not using the term waypoint for any of these boxes - waypoints are a different thing.

From here on, it gets a little weird.

To move one of your original points, drag it where you want it. All this does is move the point with its associated handles.

You can also drag a handle. This turns it into an actual point and inserts two more handles, one on each side.

To delete a point and its associated handles, click without dragging. Works well at the end or beginning of the route. Results seem to vary in the middle.

I have not found any easy way of extending an existing route. Best I've managed is to click the handle just before the final point on the route. This adds a point (by turning the handle into one), along with two more handles. Now drag the old end point. Wash, rinse, repeat until you have the extension you want.

To save your changes, click the green Check Mark icon in the original pop-up box. The discard your changes, click the X icon in the original pop-up. In my very limited experience, saving changes frequently is a good thing since I often find myself having to discard changes after screwing something up.

Hopefully, CS has a better solution!
  • Well, maybe not better, but different:
    1. Make a second track with waypoints that you want on final track
    2. Export as GPX file.
    3. Make copy for safety
    3. Open file with Word pad
    4. Delete any non-track waypoints
    5. Arrange track points into desired order by cutting and pasting
    6. Delete any unwanted track points
    7. Save file as GPX
    8. Import back to MAP page/screen, inreach.garmin.com/Map.

    Good luck!

    Thanks twolpert,

That was the tip i needed. I was able to edit the route and extend it. Essentially opened it, clicked on the pencil icon then grabbed the handle between the last two points, moved it slightly to generate two new points then moved the last point to extend the route. Continued to do that until I had completed the route.

Thanks Cowboyslim. I may try that to clean up the route when get it complete.
