Inreach Explorer +

So, I've been waiting and watching for a new version of the Inreach. Heck, I even searched the online trademark database to see if I can catch wind of a newer version coming out.

Last night, I decided to throw in the towel and I ordered the Inreach Explorer from Amazon.

Just now, I received an email from Garmin announcing the Inreach Explorer Plus.

Spooky.... :-)

Well, it's time to cancel that order.....

  • I received the following from the GPS store today:

"The date that is listed on our site is updated daily with the information that Garmin provides to us. Just like any new product things can slip but as of right now what you see is what Garmin is stating."

This date has been changed on their web site to 2/14/17.
  • new inReach

I was at the Outdoor Retailer Show in Salt Lake at the first of this month. Garmin had the new SE+ and Explorer+ on display and was demonstrating some of the features. They said the devices would be in the stores in "a couple of weeks". Since it is more than "a couple of weeks" since the show, I would expect to see them in the stores any day now.

The screens on the two models were about 4x4.5 cm. The features on the screens look to be similar to the old SE and Explorer models (like the Delorme SE and Explorer that have been in REI for a while), though the size and shape are about like my old Garmin GPSmap 60CSx, rather than like the Delorme SE and Explorer. Apparently the battery is built in unlike my Garmin 60 CSx.

The people at the booth also talked about the Earthmate app for your cell phone, which they showed with a map of the area around the Salt Palace (you can't get satellite reception inside the Salt Palace, so I couldn't see it in actual operation)

    It now reads 02/28/17.

Amazon finally listed the device for $449 so I went ahead and ordered it. I'll post here as soon as I get shipping notification.
  • Looks like the inReach Explorer+ has been discontinued by Garmin:

Anyone else received similar notifications from other vendors?

Why do you assume it has been discontinued by Garmin and not just pulled by B&H?

This device still shows as being for sale on the Garmin web site. It would be quite interesting if Garmin discontinued a product they just announced.

To answer your question, I have an order pending at Amazon. I have no received any such notice from Amazon.

    Boy, was I wrong!

Garmin USA site shows the inReach Explorer+ available to order with the note, "Processing time is 7-10 business days."

    Looks like we're in business!
