Altitude fluxuations

I've never really looked at the recorded altitude for my runs, until I started loading into training peaks. Now when I look it shows sudden variations of 10M+/-  every 100M or so on a fairly flat circuit.

On a regular circuit of mine I've calculated a total of about 40M ascent/descent on an out and back loop, according to an online topographic map. However the seesaw plot from my Garmin 5 gives a value of between 250M and 350M.

I've just checked my run log and this is an issue that started January this year. Looks like I had a few runs where altitude didn't change at all then the recorded values ballooned.

So I'm thinking either component failure or a firmware update (currently 25.00).

Anyone know of a way to check when the firmware was installed on my device?

  • The version 25.00 software update was released June 2022. I agree with your statement. The sudden variations are a sign of your barometric altimeter failing. Especially when taking into account your watch has been in use since April 2018.

  • As Garmin - Chris wrote, the sensor is most likely failing.

Maybe Garmin Support can help with discussing out of warranty repair options.

A DIY repair option is buying a back cover+midframe with the barometer sensor in it. The back covers/midframes on sale are usually not new and can have defects, also they don't come with a battery, you have to buy it separately. Be aware that you can ruin your watch and/or the parts you bought.

Alternatively, _some_ baro sensor failures respond to a small piece of waterproof flexible tape over the sensor opening before an activty. Elevation may still not be correct, but the variations may become less pronounced.
