Battery dead

Hello, I think my Fenix 5 battery is dead, if I tried to charge it, sometimes nothing happen, and most of the time I see the level stuck to 1 % and the watch become really hot.

I mean boiling hot !

I cleaned all the contacts etc.... and tried all the reset I can.

But look like battery failure right (6 years old watch) ?

thank you

  • Do NOT connect it to a charger anymore.

This is either battery failure or charging circuit (in the watch) failure. If you are comfortable doing small electronics repairs on tiny devices, you can try to order a new battery and replace it. But what you describe, the watch getting very hot, there may be damaged components inside and a new battery will not help in that case. You can always contact Garmin Support and ask for suggestions.

  • thank you, yes I can do that and try the battery replacement.

  • I don't want to sound too discouraging, but I had a 5 Plus with the same problem (got far too hot on the charger) and I could not save it, a tiny SMD component inside was broken, and a new battery did not make any difference. So it's probably a good idea to open the watch first and inspect with a microscope or powerful magnifying glass for any residue on the boards and components that have come loose or are cracked. Anyway, good luck and I hope you get it working again. BTW I personally don't ever take a watch with a replaced battery in water again. It is too easy for tiny dust specs to get on the gasket, making it less waterproof than it was.
