High temperature issue

The standard temperature widget on my Fenix 5 has stated to show temperatures >45 degrees Celsius, some 30 degrees above expected values (ambient temperature + impact of skin heat).
I've turned the watch off and put it in the fridge for an hour and when restarting it the widget indicated 35 degrees Celsius.
The barometer and altimeter seems to work fine.

Any ideas on a fix?

  • Did you try a reset yet? Do the barometer and altimeter still work correctly?

  • I have done a reset (Restore Defaults) but the issues remains.
The barometer and altimeter seems to work fine, the values are as expected

  • This is very strange, such small variation is not proportional to actual temperature variation, so 35 to 45 can't be due to the unit mistakenly showing Fahrenheit. It is not likely a broken sensor module because that usually results in a high value that is stuck or '---', plus often the altimeter and barometer stuck on impossible values. Dirt in the sensor hole won't have an effect like this. It is not a misbehaving CIQ widget/glance as you are using the standard built-in temperature widget. You are not using an external Tempe temperature sensor. And you did a reset to defaults.

So, I have no other ideas, than to contact Garmin support and ask them. Please share if you find out the cause. It is interesting.

  • Contacted Garmin Support, did a full Reset and sent them info from internal Barometer Test showing the issue.
They gave no feedback other than offering me to buy a Fenix 5 Pro at a discount.

  • Thank you for posting the 'solution' although it does not really solve the problem for you unfortunately. I don't know if it is an option in your area, but maybe you can send the watch to Garmin for 'out of warranty repair', which may be a better deal than buying a new one with a discount. Given the age of the Fenix 5, it is probably no longer in stock and you may receive a newer model anyway.
