Garmin Fenix 5X in 2022?

Hi Everyone,

New to Garmin Eco system and currently have the Garmin Edge 530 bike computer and am very happy with it.

I am looking at also getting a Garmin Fenix 5X Sapphire. Found a used unit for $300 CAD (live in western Canada). I would be using it for hiking, swimming, and Snowboarding in winter. Would the 5X hold up in 2022? Battery life seems decent and most features in the watch look great, also considering that is also has maps available on the watch. Would anyone recommend at this price point?

  • Fenix 6X could be find for 399€ (new) here in France, software is always under development, but don't know for how many times.

I do not recommend 5X, other than price purpose.

F945 if the design is not a prerequisite ?

  • Firstly go for the 5x(sapphire). And hell yes they are a good intro... I got the 5x around 9 months ago after being a suunto user for 20+years  and will never look back.. Thought there are issues(most phone app related) the watches are bomb proof.. I use mine when caving,Kayaking, Moutaineering. Alpine skiing the occassional Dive and sooooooo much more... I actaully class it as an essential item now as I use it that much....

Is the Fenix 5x worth getting YES.. I looked at the 6 range (no 7 when I got mine) and to be honest there was very little in it. Slightly better screen, a battery that was marginal when it comes to actual gps use etc and an SPO2 sensor..... Battery is easy to sort, if you are away just charge on a power bank as needed(thats all I do on expeditions etc) so that negates that one and I get easily 11 days one day to day use with life still left in the battery...   SPO2, Unless you are unhealth or a runner etc you will not miss it at all.....

Whats more because it is an older device most if not all bugs are ironed out or there is a solution too and there is literally thousands of apps etc...

I work and play in the outdoors due to being an outdoor guide/instructor and MRT, for me the F5x is a must have and is worth ever damn penny

If you do get the Fenix 5(x) then drop me a pm.

  • WOuld be useful if you said why you don't recommend the 5x... As I would and have said the complete opposite!!!

  • As Li-batteries are damaged when they are completely discharged over a longer period, I would never buy a "new" device which has spent years somewhere in a drawer (obviously discharged).
Considering a used device, I recently saw a Fenix 5 plus which ended at 140€ on Ebay (same watch I have), so no need to buy an even older device.
A device which is regulary used and charged, can last very long. My Fenix 3 is now 6 years old and is still used by a club mate and my F5+ does still work as on day 1 after 3 1/4 years.

  • I refer you to my response above.. Please not my past f=times and occupations ;-)

PS I nordic,XC ski and mountain ski to plus teach and guide these activities and the F5x is damn perfect
