Garmin is adding new "HRV status" feature to base model 255 but not the flagship Fenix5 ?

My next watch will probably not be a Garmin anymore, why bother?

  • We will not get any new features directly from Garmin... Theres been no updated/fixed Firmware since jan/feb this year... so doubt there will even be a new one fixing the issues reported already let alone one with new features...

  • The Fenix 5 is no longer a flagship seeing as it was released 5 years ago and has been superseded by the Fenix 5 Plus, Fenix 6 and Fenix 7!.  It is now 4 generations old and has had lots of support during its life.  Do you own an Android phone? do they get new features and updates after about 6 months?

  • I suggest you DON'T use phones as a way to get a point a cross.. As many phones from LG,Xiaomi,Samsung etc  WOULD recieve new features through OS updates even AFTER they nolonger sold the phones...  And even Samsung, Sony and Apple will add new features to there existing watches years after they stopped selling them. SO if you wish to go from that basis and as Garmin STILL sell these watches on their websites and even manufacture them to a certain degree. If could be argued that we SHOULD expect new features to be added as well as FULL OS updates. The difference is most users accept that garmin will not do this....

  • Why should we expect updates? you bought the watch on the basis of the features it had at the time not what might be added at a later date!  The Fenix 5 and 5 Plus haven't been listed on the main Garmin website for quite a while now so it could be argued that they are past end of life and should not expect any more features.  Has it also occurred to you that some of the newer features might be hardware dependent on hardware that the Fenix 5 simply does not have?

  • First it is STILL listed for sale in the UK. on Garmins site. Secondly I said based on phone and other watch manufactures it COULD be argued that we could expect new features.. Next time take note on how things are worded.. As to the hardware part well DUH but then some of the newest features are appearing on new watches with LESSER hardware etc  so some features are NOT HW dependant or had that escaped you?? Either way I NEVER said We should expect anything I just used YOUR original argument as a basis to point out that many phone and companies release software updates and full OS updates for their old flagships several years after they stopped selling them and the same goes for watches.. And an example of that is last year my old Sonysmartwatch 3 got an updated OS and thats is way older than the Fenix5x..  If you intend to argue then read how things are worded...

  • So you're saying the Fenix 5 has the elevate V4 hrm and multi-band GNSS? if so then of course it can handle the features of the 255, if not then it can't.

  • Did I say anything of the sort???   As to HRM/HRV there are many apps in the store that provide this feature they may not be as advanced(I have nothing to compare it to) here is the one I use to do just that   HRV Analysis | Garmin Connect IQ   so its a mute point. The feature can be provided via IQ there for it could be added by Garmin in a firmware release.... But you keep arguing and I will keep disproving you

  • Just had a quick look at what the HRV will provide on the 255 and it seems the the IQ app I linked to will provide that and so much more. and It will do this on all compatible models... So as per usual a Third party app OUT PERFORMS the Garmin app.. Go Figure..     This just shows it is possible to add the feature...     But in doing so Garmin would not get people buying new watches would they??
