question about my fenix 5X

Hi

my Fenix 5X is now obsolete. But, moments ago, I got a notification on my watch that it just updated software version 25. What is wrong with Garmin that they would push a software update to an obsolete product?

I should probably put a /S since people don’t always catch that on Reddit. There’s no such thing as “obsolete” in the Garmin world. Yeah, there are newer products with increasing features and better performance, but I have not seen from Garmin anything along the lines of planned obsolescence. My 5X still does everything it did on the day I bought it, actually a little more since over the years I have learned about features I never knew about in the first place. Yes, we are coming up on five years since this watch was released. But mine, along with I suspect most of the units out in the wild, is nowhere near end of life.

So I do realize that most of the content on this forum is geared toward the latest model, so I will add a conclusion to make my post relevant. I have seen absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Garmin has changed their practices in terms of software support or build quality. To anyone here wondering if the very expensive Fenix 7 series is worth the purchase price, just keep in mind that unlike most smart watches, you can very reasonably expect it to last and work well for well beyond four or five years. I don’t think that you will find a lot of people using 2017 model Apple watches who are eager to report that it still serves them well.

Garmin Fenix watches are about as close as you can get to a buy it for life wristwatch in a GPS capable fitness device.

  • I got my Fenix 5x 7 months ago NEW of Amazon.. Apart from the quirks with the pathetic connect app(EG requires DATA connection to change watch settings!! of view full stats) The Watch is FRIGGING AWESOME.

I have since looked at the latest models and to be honest as I am very outdoor/climbing, caving,Shooting etc orientated, I cannot see the need to up grade any time in the next 4-5 years. Yes I know the battery is only around 12days so I need a power bank when away in the mountains training etc, But you would need the same for the 6 or 7 range if you are using the GPS daily so the battery life is only really relevant when in light use, this I do and get 10-11 days USE!!  Yes an SPO2 monitor would be nice but it is NOT essential and more gears to general sports such as running.  I came from the Sunnto Ambit range ( I had and still have every ambit Peak they did) They was Amazing and had mini apps. But now I have everything(other then the ambits amazing battery life) the Ambit3peak had and maps with apps and widgets and custom watchfaces. I literally have the best of both worlds and I love it.. Most devs are bloody amazing and very helpful as well.

So for me the Fenix 5x (partner now has 5s as she prefers the size)  is what I need, does what I need and quite frankly is worth every penny!  Will I upgrade next year ? Only if I some how kill the 5x it is that simply....

What do you mean by obsolete? Do you mean it lacks the gimmicks garmin added to newer versions of their watches for marketing purposes?

What is wrong with Garmin that they would push a software update

What's wrong with providing softare updates? Apple provides updates to phones they don't sell anymore. Microsoft is providing updates to old hardware. Really, what's wrong with garmins behaviour.

The opposite is more true. Garmin doesn't provide enuogh updates to old hardware. If they would organise their softwaredevelopment process better they could even push featureupdates to older watches (as long as the hardware supports it).

Maybe you buy watches to have the latest version. Other people buy a watch because they need certain features and newer watches don't add new must have features, so they keep using the watch that suites them
