Hi
my Fenix 5X is now obsolete. But, moments ago, I got a notification on my watch that it just updated software version 25. What is wrong with Garmin that they would push a software update to an obsolete product?
I should probably put a /S since people don’t always catch that on Reddit. There’s no such thing as “obsolete” in the Garmin world. Yeah, there are newer products with increasing features and better performance, but I have not seen from Garmin anything along the lines of planned obsolescence. My 5X still does everything it did on the day I bought it, actually a little more since over the years I have learned about features I never knew about in the first place. Yes, we are coming up on five years since this watch was released. But mine, along with I suspect most of the units out in the wild, is nowhere near end of life.
So I do realize that most of the content on this forum is geared toward the latest model, so I will add a conclusion to make my post relevant. I have seen absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Garmin has changed their practices in terms of software support or build quality. To anyone here wondering if the very expensive Fenix 7 series is worth the purchase price, just keep in mind that unlike most smart watches, you can very reasonably expect it to last and work well for well beyond four or five years. I don’t think that you will find a lot of people using 2017 model Apple watches who are eager to report that it still serves them well.
Garmin Fenix watches are about as close as you can get to a buy it for life wristwatch in a GPS capable fitness device.
