Fenix 5 gps is not accurate after 24.10 software update

Hi,

Since the 24.10 update, my fenix 5 gps accuracy is out.  I was normally very close to the running partners I have, now after the update, I am short every run.  Also you can see on the mapping it is not smooth or following the correct paths like it used too.

Anyone else having the same problem?  Is there a revision I should switch back too?

Thanks.

  • Although possible, I really doubt your issue is related directly to 24.10.  As this has been out for 3 months, if it was causing a new GPS problem the forum would be full of threads on it.  Without seeing examples, one common cause of a non-smooth track is being in Ultra track mode so I would check the GPS settings for the activity.  You might also want to test different GPS, GPS+Galileo/GLONASS combos.  Finally, go through the series of resets starting with a simple off/on (if you have not done this since the update).

  • Thanks for the reply. I switched it off after every run so it's not that. Its on normal GPS mode, nothings changed there either.  Also coincided with updating the software as I hadn't connected to Garmin express for months. What do you mean series of resets?

  • Hard Reset: Hold down your top left power button until your watch shuts off then let go once off

Factory Master Reset: How to Reset My Garmin Outdoor Watch - note that this loses all your watch data and it needs to be set up again.  Last option!

Again, all this is speculation.  If you leave the watch off without syncing then start it for a run (with days between) you could also be seeing an issue with poor GPS initial accuracy because the EPO file is out of date and Other satellite data is old.  I won't go into the details (they are available) but there are a set of processes that go on when getting and keeping a good GPS lock that starts with being able to more quickly find the satellites (EPO file - this is updated when you sync the watch and is good for a few days to a week) to then downloading more detailed information from the satellites to allow better and more accurate location.  You might have seen the term "soaking" used where you leave the watch with an activity running (outside) for 20 or so minutes to fully update GPS Satellite information.  All this allows the GPS chip to more quickly find and update satellites being used.   The more satellites the better (normally).  A reason to try setting GPS+Glonass or Galileo (assuming your watch has these options.

Really have nothing more to help or suggest.

Edit:  Except you can see if the EPO file is up to date under System-About (it is the last item (or first when going up on my 5X)

  • Thanks again :)

I will try the hard reset...assuming that is different to just switching it off right?

I always sync through garmin connect on my phone after every run if that helps...would the EPO file update then?

Just an update, most of the runs are ok, but you can see at certain small sections the GPS goes off the track sharply, then back on, or off the track for a few hundred metres then back on again.  This is the issue I find.

Also historically with this watch since I bought it, it loses distance on real steep hills.  I have it on the normal GPS mode.

  • wojie24, if it is only happening at certain areas this may be terrain, builds etc causing it.  Try using one of the GPS plus Glonass or Galileo settings as this provided more satellites available.  Regarding the hills, if really steep then some distance will be lost as the horizontal distance is less than the actual distance. You can try setting 3D distance ON.  Keep in mind that if you do the math, it takes a steep and long hill to make a major difference.

  • It happens on every run now.  Normally shorter by ~0.15km over 10km.  Doesn't matter which route, it is short every time now compared to the same routes before the update.  Flat runs aren't as bad as hilly runs though.  I will try the different GPS settings and see how that goes, but in the past this has not made a difference. I thought the GPS allows for vert so it calculates the real distance not just horizontal topical distance?

  • Tried glonass and again didnt work properly, again 0.15km short on a run route i have done heaps of times with no problems.

  • Glad it works better.  I would not expect it to be consistent as the number of each type of sat in view varies minute by minute and, frankly, 150m over 10km is well within any accuracy expectation for GPS.

  • I always sync through garmin connect on my phone after every run if that helps...would the EPO file update then?

Yes, but to really complete the process, the watch should stay connected to the opened Connect mobile app via Bluetooth for about 5 minutes.
