Why are activities limited - why not charge for extras?

I bough a Fenix 5 watch as a 'multi-sport' watch - I didn't want to limit my choices of activities.

But slowly Garmin have made their watches more and more specific by removing features that had worked in the past: if you want to track free-diving you need a Descent watch, if you want to track Surfing you need an Instinct, if you want to track HIIT workouts you need a Venu etc etc.

Now I appreciate Garmin are in the business of selling watches and they want to encourage (force?) you to upgrade. But isn't there another way?

Why don't Garmin allow users to pay for additional activities that they feel should be 'premium' enough to warrant a dedicated watch? Maybe £10 ($10) or something to enable the Surf tracking function, or HIIT workout, or remove the depth limit on the Fenix 6 barometer etc.

Just a thought. Interested to hear other peoples thoughts on this idea.
