Data field on map screen when navigating

Hi guys, I use my Fenix 5 (actually Quatix 5) a lot to follow a gpx course. I choose Cycling as activity, and then choose navigate - course.

Now when following a course, I used to have a little checkered flag with the distance still to be cycled next to it, but lately, all I see is a green dot and a number that seems to indicate the distance in a straight line to the starting point (which usually is the finish as well). How do I get my checkered flag back?

I thought that maybe the watch hadn't recognized the fact that I had gone past the starting point, so it hadn't started counting yet, but it never starts, even when I am walking around the starting point and the distance next to the green dot is 1m...

  • Maybe I'll get some response if I split up the question:

    1. Am I right that on the map screen in navigation mode, a green dot with a number next to it indicates distance to starting point?

    2. How do I get this dot to disappear and have the map screen show the distance to finish instead (and the little checkered flag of course)!

  • Hmm still works for me on Fenix 5. With a test course around my house the green dot disappears almost immediately and then it says course started and shows distance to next coursepoint. And it starts further than 1m. Navigation>Courses>(select the course)>Do Course. I transferred the course to the watch using Garmin Connect app and bluetooth connection.

  • Yes it's strange. I did a course last weekend and it worked perfectly, but previously it didn't, four or five times in a row.

Thanks for verifying that the course should start in a distance > 1m from the starting point.

That means that seeing a green dot and a distance of 1 or 2 m on the map screen without the course starting is really erratic behaviour.

  • The mystery still isn't solved. More often than not, I keep seeing the green dot and the distance to starting point during the whole route, while I should be seeing the distance that I still have to do.

However, I do have new evidence. I made a photo standing in the exact spot where my route started. As you can see, distance to start is 0 meters. And still, the green dot won't disappear. Any thoughts?
