Chronos bricked after v22.40 update?

Hi,

I have a Chronos but had stopped using it after I got a MARQ some time ago. The MARQ firmware proved rather unstable and I had updated it several times through Garmin Express.

Today I charged and fired up my Chronos and it purred nicely as always. But after checking and realising that there's been several firmware updates I decided to connect it to Garmin Express to have it updated. GE detected the Chronos, after adding it to my profile GE suggested installing the firmware right away. Off we go and after a while the updater came back telling me to disconnect and that some user action was required on the watch, before re-connecting.

The watch was asking for the OK to update to v22.40 (will take 4 minutes), and after confirmation the progress bar set off, everything looking ok. Once the progress bar had done the full circle, the watch restarted with the triangle logo. I connected it back to GE, which continued waiting for it. Which got me a little worried.

After a few minutes of leaving it in this state I realised the triangle would repeatedly disappear and come back, it continued to do this and after about 15-20mins I realised it had entered a boot loop. I disconnected it from USB then tried

- turned it off >15sec "press light" (soft reset), but when powering on it will go straight into the same boot loop.

- turned it off, pressed UR/LR/LL while turn it on, releasing UR after the first beep and LR after the second beep (factory reset), but it would enter the boot loop straight away

- connected it to USB/GE, nothing....

- connected it to USB/GE with UR pressed, I'm getting a Garmin device in Windows device manager, but no storage device visible etc. GE will detect something, but won't connect to it.

I saw all the comments about deleting firmware bits etc, in the folder on the watch, but I'm not getting the folders...

Anything else that you would try if your were in the same situation?

It's not like I don't like my MARQ but I definitely love the Chronos, so it's sad to see it in this sorry state. Forgot to mention the Chronos was quite expensive also, so it's a bit unfortunate that it  seems bricked by an official firmware update, it wasn't that old after all...

Thanks for your help.

Best regards

  • Hi again,

found out there's a "hammer - problem - nail" software called WebUpdater. Tried it on my now bricked Chronos, (I have to keep "START" pressed to get the watch to show up as device in Windows device manager)

    this is what happens:

Now 3.81 Megabytes does not look like enough firmware for a watch this capable  (but I agree it's enough firmware for a defunct device... sigh...)

Awaiting your suggestions how to solve this

    Thanks!

    Best regards
