Fenix 5X Plus won't charge, in fact when I get the plug to connect to it, it discharges instead

I've had my Fenix 5X for a year to year and a half and slowly over time it's been harder and harder to get the charging cable to connect to the watch.  At first it would be intermittent and over time it's been more and more consistently not recognizing that it's plugged in and takes quite a while to get it to start charging.

A new issues has cropped up recently where I finally get it to recognize it's plugged in but instead of charging, it drains the battery or discharges it.  So now I am at 3% and have no way of charging my battery.

If it were a really old Garmin, that would be one thing.  But I paid $600 for it and got 1.5 years worth of use and really want to figure out if there is a fix or if the Fenix 5X Plus is a lemon.

Thanks for any help

  • The same thing now is happening to my one. The same model, purchased in 2018. Three years of use. Some months ago, I realized that recharging was becoming more difficult. I plugged the watch, but there was no signal of recharge. Now, the same problem remains, but now sharpened: when I plug the watch, its battery is drained instead of recharged.

Garmin, could you enter the game?

  • As this is a user forum with only some direct Garmin representatives participation (most welcomed I’ll add), you should contact Garmin support. directly.  Having said that, take a really close look at the pins on the watch to make sure they are not corroded or bent. There was an issue early on with pin corrosion. In addition try with another cable if possible.

  • Reach out directly to them, call the support number on their site and describe the problem.  Garmin more than impressed me with their response and solution.  My watch was a few months past the warranty period but they sent me a refurbished replacement on an $180 deposit.  Once they received my watch in return they immediately refunded the deposit.

Their support people were great to work with and super helpful and friendly.  This type of service is a great way to ensure customer brand loyalty and it's working with me.

    Good luck.

  • I have a 5S, and after a year or so I started having trouble with the watch and cable connecting to charge. But eventually the cable also seemed loose, and would sometimes fall out. A new cable fixed it. However, I didn’t experience the discharging problem. I would suggest trying a new cable to see if that helps.
