Europe Fenix 5X - Insufficient Space Error when updating to TopoActive 2021.10 EU map update

Due to the size of the TopoActive 2021.10 EU map released in early May, there is not enough space for both the Cycle Map and the TopoActive 2021.10 EU map on a 16GB Fenix 5X or Descent MK1 watch. Our engineers are working on a solution.

If you would like to be added to the tracking case so you will receive an email from our Outdoor Helpdesk team once resolved, please highlight my name and send me a private message.

  • A solution could be to allow user to decide which map to load on the watch (rare are those who need the south west and north east at the same time), through basecamp for instance or by making sure Garmin Express will re-install any map desired whenever user wants it...

It is surprising to see only basic maps in map re-install section... (and scary too... if you loose it, you loose it, at least until the next update).

So splitting the update from Europe Cycle map (or TopoActive) 2021.10 to Europe North East Cycle map (or TopoActive) 2021.10 and Europe South West Cycle map (or TopoActive)  2021.10 and not doing install all would do the trick... But it may be too simple to be done :-)

  • there is a technical reason for Garmin Express being able to reinstall only the base maps....they are free, the other you need to pay for them (but those natively included in your device). Garmin Expres does not verify your map licenses (aka your shopping history) on the Garmin shop DB, just updates those you already have installed.

regarding the manual map switch....well it would not be so convenient for those like me lining in Italy (west-South map) and working in Austria (eastern-northern map). I sometimes rum in Austria during the lunch break, sometimes in Italy in the late afternoon....

  • You are right, it only would be a workaround. Still you could then choose between TopoAcive and Cycle to get something good enough.

But mostly you are correct, what I described as a possible solution looks more to a workaround for people in your area...

If the solution is not in selecting which map to install, the only alternative would seems to be reducing the level of details of those maps to make them smaller. But is it a better option ?
Of course, there is another possibility: Cease support :-(

  • yes, there is a better option:

it is to switch to the new solution Garmin adopted from the Fenix 5x plus and following

That is to merge the topo and the cycle maps as far as most of the informations are duplicated

The solution is proved to be backward compatible with the 5x as far as Garmin installed these maps on the latest 5x they manufactured.

The matter is they need to find a solution to have this installation/switch automatic and supported by  Garmin Express

  • Buying a new watch will be the best solution for Garmin unless you switch to 

  • I disagree to this last one.

First, my watch has not been made unusable all of a sudden and I am sure I can survive the lack of map update for a year or more. As long as I can plot my trip from basecamp or Garmin Connect.

Second, the watch is fairly expensive, and while I consider it is worth it, I might as well switch to a different brand and (never) come back. See, the problem is not to have no more update, it is to be let down to an impossible upgrade that would render your watch unsuable, something like Apple used to do until I left ;-) (Well, last time I check they did not stop because I left :-D )

I know it is not quite the same, but not having an update ould not have hurt my feeling, having a failed updated I can not use is just frustrating.... Humans and their feeling... stupid machine I'd say.... :-)

  • Completely agree with you.

What frustrates me is the fact that all our most Garmin reactions are so slow and sometimes taking ages to correct known issues.

Fênix 3 always had consistent attitude/barometer values/changes, Fênix 5X has been a mass from beginning. Three and half years later and still no consistence. And after software 10.20 is worst than ever. Not possible to look at one code and trying to implement it in the other? The way a look to Garmin engineers it looks they all a bunch of kids with no experience and no interest in sorting problems.

  • update: there is no more map offered on Garmin Express anymore... :-(

  • The "Topo Map" update has been turned off for the Fenix 5X due to size increases over the time since the watch was released.

For the Fenix 5 Plus series and all Fenix generations since, a new "TopoActive map" is on the watch vs. a standard Topo map like the Fenix 5X. The TopoActive EU map has been created in smaller regions to avoid a memory issue as the map grows annually.
