Europe Fenix 5X - Insufficient Space Error when updating to TopoActive 2021.10 EU map update

Due to the size of the TopoActive 2021.10 EU map released in early May, there is not enough space for both the Cycle Map and the TopoActive 2021.10 EU map on a 16GB Fenix 5X or Descent MK1 watch. Our engineers are working on a solution.

If you would like to be added to the tracking case so you will receive an email from our Outdoor Helpdesk team once resolved, please highlight my name and send me a private message.

  • I've read elsewhere that the Cycle Map is only o the Fenix 5x, the plus series does not have it

Originally the cycle map was the only one featuring altitude data, guess now Garming added these info in the topo active as well. But we should ask Chris about it

  • Great question. The information will be a little lengthy but good to know.

There are two different Fenix 5X watches in use:

    1) A Fenix 5X that came with both a standard Topo map and a Cycle Map on it. In that instance, both maps are needed.

When our Fenix 5 Plus series came out, the TopoActive map replaced needing the cycle map too. Freeing up precious space for music and alternate mapping on new Fenix generations.

    2) A Fenix 5X with the TopoActive map and the Cycle map. (We highly highly recommend not deleting any mapping on your watch. If you do, it may result in having no working maps. There are certain maps that Garmin Express will NOT install back to your watch.)

The challenge for engineering researching a solution is what direction to approach the size of the TopoActive 2021.10 EU map.

  • So for the oldest F5x units  the easiest solution would be to move to the new TopoActive MAPS(those not needing the Cycle Map to work), thus freeing up space. I guess most of the power user would prefer a manual procedure to accomplish this, rather than getting a stripped down release of the TopoActive, shrunk smaller to coexist with the cycle map in the old way.

I can imagine such a procedure would need to add the rights for the new maps. I've been though this once because of a similar problem happened couple years ago. The guy from the Garmin tech support added manually me the right to purchase back the map I had deleted (due to a misleading procedure from another tech guy from Garmin as well....)

  • I imagine Garmin Express will need to be able to do what is required depending on the Fenix 5X watch plugged in. It will be important that the new process remain as user friendly as possible to take care of all users and technical skill levels.

  • the Garmin's Way we're have been used to is usually the following: provide a manual procedure for the most skilled and impatient users, whilst in the meantime work on a more sophisticated and automated solution for the other.

  • My Garmin Fenix 5x watch came with both maps. I already made the mistake of deleting the maps. Garmin Express no longer shows me that I can still install maps. What can be done ?
  • I am sending you a direct Private Message to work with you further.

  • Hi Chris, i made mistake delete TopoActive 2021.10 Eu and cycle maps on Fenix 5x.  How ca redownload?  Garmin express not repair?

  • Is there any chance of solving the problem before the summer? Are there any resolution forecasts?

  • It is an unknown when the issue will be resolved. Regarding the tracking case for the issue, for anyone that is not already on it, please highlight my name and send me a private message. I will be happy to get you added so you will be contacted once the issue is resolved.
