5X GPS Firmware

Is it possible to update the GPS firmware on my 5X?

Experiencing poor accuracy with my 5X when hiking and looking for solutions. Largely default settings, my activities are in or around Vancouver, BC Canada. I've tried GPS and GPS+Glonass.

Ordinarily I'd write it off as GPS signal strength issues, the 5X seems to be considered inaccurate but given my girlfriends Vivoactive 4 does much better, I'd really like to see my expensive watch perform reasonably well. On our last hike together my track had 3KM extra which just seems ridiculous. We've had people commenting online asking if we were even hiking together lol.

Going to try changing Auto Pause to when stopped and changing Data Recording to every second.

I also noted the GPS firmware on fellrnr review of the 5X the is much higher (4.30) than mine (2.70).
I haven't been able to find any information on or find a manner to update this. Help?

TIA

  • Firmware 4.30 is much older. For some reason Garmin changed their versionnumbers and 2.70 is the latest for your watch.

Also, gps reception on the fenix 5 series wasn’t very good, compared to the internal same forerunner 935. Probably caused by the metal in the case (forerunner 935 has a lighter plastic case). But I’m not sure that also applied to the x version.

  • Biggest take away from your post is "and changing Data Recording to every second".  The 5X GPS is not amazing and never will be but it is generally OK, however not using "every second" will really impact it (negatively).  There is very little reason to not use "every second" except in some very special circumstances.  Auto Pause may help but may also mess things up.  it will prevent the meandering track you see when stopped but unless you are paused for a long time, this will not really add much distance - I just pause the activity for long stops.
