Golf app crashes on fenix 5

After having ongoing problems with my va3, I sold it and got a fenix 5.

The fenix, while an all round better device in most aspects, is almost useless with golf.

I reboot the device before each game. After a few shots, I notice I'm back at the watch face. So I start the golf app again and it offers to resume the round.

The problem is that while it keeps track of the score it loses the shot data which is the most important reason for having a gps golf device!

I've tried factory resetting the device. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the golf app. This problem seems to happen every time.

My gfs 5s is fine. No problems at all.

I see there's a post in the 5x forum for people having problems with the app crashing too.

Garmin, you need to sort this out. The device is a premium and expensive item and is kind of not fit for purpose.

    I know I am late to this conversation but I have been suffering from these intermittent crashes while playing golf for a couple of years now. I religiously record my rounds so I have a detailed record of each activity which includes the software version. When I suffer from a crash on course the shot record does not include the holes from the round before the crash so I have been able to work back through the records and figure out when it first happened.

    The first thing to note is that I got the Fenix 5 in August 2017 with sw version 5.30.0.0 and it worked flawlessly right up to August 2019 and sw version 13.40.0.0. Sometime between 13 and 15 Aug 2019 the watch updated to sw version 14.10.0.0 and on 17 Aug 2019 I had the first instance of an on course crash. 

    So this is definitely not a hardware problem as the Garmin admins have tried to claim. Having seen reports on this thread that disabling Bluetooth seems to eliminate the problem I would guess that as a notification is transmitted from the phone to watch the message handling interrupt overloads the processor and the crash occurs. This would explain the seemingly random nature of the crash as it will depend when the notification comes in and specifically what the watch is doing at the time.

    I do not suffer as frequently as some seem to but it is very irritating.

    So a couple of weeks ago now my watch updated with a new version of software to 22.20 ( 2a587ca )

    When I used to start up the golf course prior to this sometimes before I got the course up and running and had a chance to turn off Bluetooth my watch would crash,  I noticed after this update that my watch was no longer doing this. 

    So I decided to try golf without switching off Bluetooth. I've played several times now and at different golf courses and I've had 1 crash,  all of the other rounds have been totally crash free,  my wife who also had the same problem on her 5s has also tried not switching off Bluetooth and her watch has also performed flawlessly. 

    This has obviously been a software problem all along. Has anyone else had a similar experience?   Garmin - Rob if this was down to you thank you.

    I was also having that issue and have found that it has now been fixed with the update.

    I have only been able to play one round of golf since Rob contacted me and got me to factory reset my watch (which was after 22.20 update) but that round went smoothly. It's a very small sample size but I'd be stoked if it were fixed.

    I have the same issue to! App crashes while loading course data or when starting round. Some time it is just stuck in loading data mode.

    This issue should be resolved with the last update. Please make sure your watch is up to date with Garmin Express.

    I am having the same issue.

    I have updated to last software version, switch off Bluetooth, hard reset of the watch etc….and randomly the watch crashes during the golf game 

    how is it possible to fix it please?

    Damn. Mine has stopped crashing since this update. Its got other golf related problems now but the crashing definitely stopped.

    My Fenix is currently on software v25. Hope you can work it out
