Golf app crashes on fenix 5

After having ongoing problems with my va3, I sold it and got a fenix 5.

The fenix, while an all round better device in most aspects, is almost useless with golf.

I reboot the device before each game. After a few shots, I notice I'm back at the watch face. So I start the golf app again and it offers to resume the round.

The problem is that while it keeps track of the score it loses the shot data which is the most important reason for having a gps golf device!

I've tried factory resetting the device. I've tried deleting and reinstalling the golf app. This problem seems to happen every time.

My gfs 5s is fine. No problems at all.

I see there's a post in the 5x forum for people having problems with the app crashing too.

Garmin, you need to sort this out. The device is a premium and expensive item and is kind of not fit for purpose.

  • Thanks Chris, but please stop tagging your posts as answers. I appreciate your contribution and that this isn't your fault but it's not helpful to others who are seeking a solution.

Seems a lot like disabling bluetooth on the phone can help with reducing the amount of faults that occur so perhaps it is a combination of phone model, bluetooth version and the Fenix. Just because you can't recreate it in your labs, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Thanks for your suggestions. You might have nailed it. I'm happy to turn off bluetooth if it means my golf app works properly. I'm playing tomorrow morning so will see how it goes. I've also just replaced my phone so that will be intersting to see if I do leave bluetooth on, if the problem persists with this model.

    I'll report back.

  • I've been having the crash issues but only while playing golf, I can walk and hike and my watch never crashes.

My watch is now 3 years old so to repair it or replace it would cost me more money.

My wife's 5s also has the same issues but hers are worse.  The other day her watch crashed 16 times while playing golf!

After spending time on the forums I decided to give the turning Bluetooth off solution a go.  The first time we tried this was at a different course to the one where we had the issues, after disabling Bluetooth both our watches performed as they should, no issues, no crashing.

Today we have played at the course where we both had multiple crashing issues, again we got the course up and running on our watches and then disabled Bluetooth on our phones. Yet again both watches performed faultlessly no issues at all.

The issues are obviously something to do with Bluetooth, I'll continue to disable it every time I play.  That seems to work for us.

  • Hi

My wife and I have exactly the same issues. My wife's watch crashed 16 times during one round and mine 4 times.  Try disabling Bluetooth on your phone after you have you're watch up and running at the course.  I read that on one thread on the forum.

My wife and I have both tried this solution over several rounds and so far our golf has been crash free. Now I just need to sort out my game!Rofl You won't receive any texts or messages to you're watch once Bluetooth is off but as I'm playing golf that didn't bother me too much.

Hope this helps if you've not already tried it. ThumbsupThumbsup

  • Hi Garmin.  My fenix 5 is 5 years old and I have 100s of rounds of golf without this constant stopping mid round issue. This problem started in the last month or two. It worked perfectly before. Someone at Garmin has changed something and now it doesn't work and I am VERY frustrated.  If you are not going to fix this I am not going to buy another Garmin.  I will buy something else.

PLEASE ADVISE WHEN YOU HAVE FIXED THIS. Don't tell us you can't simulate this problem.  Everyone I know with a fenix 5 is having this problem

  • Everyone I know with a fenix 5 is having this problem

If this is still occurring, perhaps  can advise, as he has been responding to golf-related issues lately.

  • My wife and I have the same issues,  what we do now is get the course up and running and then switch off Bluetooth on our phones.  Been over a month now loads of different courses and all crash free.  Not ideal but it works for us and is better than the constant frustration during your round of golf.

  • I have found that turning bluetooth off also helps me as well. Must be something specific to a handshake between the Fenix and a certain type of bluetooth, be it hardware or software. It's clearly not an isolated problem but turning off bluetooth has made a huge difference to me.

  • Thank you - I will try this on Saturday !!

  • So I played this morning.  Started the round on my watch and them turn Bluetooth off on my phone.  The App work perfectly and after the round started Bluetooth on my phone again and it download everything .

SO Garmin.  ....... the problem is with the Bluetooth connection between the watch and the phone. We look forward to a repair for this in thr next up date !!

  • I am sending you private messages to gather additional details. Anyone else who is having issues with the Golf app crashing on their Fenix 5, please highlight my name and send me a private message.
