hiking routes preloaded

Hi

New to using my Fenix 5x.

I am going on a hike this weekend and wondered if there are preloaded hikes that I can follow?  I can see that I can build my own hike, but wondered if I have access to ones that people have planned out already.

Apologies if this is a silly question - new to this type of watch.

Thanks

Craig

  • Hi yeah, the way this works is you find a website with the trail you want that offers GPX file download. You download the file to your computer. Then on Garmin Connect website, go to the Training section, then Courses. Import the GPX. Save it with a name you can remember. Then go to Garmin Connect app on your phone, Training section. and Courses list. Click the hiking route you want, then Send to Device, pick your watch from the list. Then sync your watch to the phone. Now go to the watch and hold the upper RIght button to get the list of activity types, scrollllllll down beyond the activities to Navigation, then Courses, and pick your hike name, the Do Course.     Note that if you want to have your hike recorded as an activity, you also have to start the activity. Following a course and recording an activity are separate functions.    Websites like alltrails.com and hikingproject.com have files you can download, for example.

    Great!

Thabknyou so much for the comprehensive instructions and information.
    very much appreciated.

  • Carleson explained well Garmin way, I add to this information, that if you have android phone and use Locus map, there is IQ app for watch through which you can send trails directly from the mobile app Locus. am using it and it is great.

  • iPhone:  Another option - you can do this from the phone as well.  If you want to design your own route 9on the fly so to speak) I use "EasyRoute" (others available).  you design your route and then "Share" as a GPX.  This brings up the iPhone menu  where you scroll right along the apps 9scond line), select MORE and down to "Copy to Connect".  This will open up Connect and you can modify and save the route then add to the watch.  Easyroute infludes the option to share as FIT but on the iPhone this will not give you the Copy to Connect option - must be a GPX.

Similar process for GPX files strored on a cloud drive or local regardless of where they came from.
