Wrist Strap Broke While Open Water Swimming

While swimming this weekend the wrist strap on the Fenix 5 Plus that I've owned for about 2 months snapped, my watch sunk while I floated away with the current. I wanted the product and didn't want to effect my training I turned around and purchased a brand new one the next day. I just got off the phone with Garmin and they have nothing to say but it's a strange situation and they've just "never" heard of the wrist band breaking and even after they acknowledge I bought a new watch the next day there just absolutely nothing they can do about the fact their wrist strap broke.

The customer support representative said he's a moderator on this forum and has just never heard of such a thing happening. We'll it does, and I'm posting this so maybe the next time something like this happens Garmin will actually back up their product.

  • I wonder if it's possible that the strap's quick release was not attached properly, and shook loose while you were swimming?

  • I never removed the strap, didn't even know or care how until seeing this message.

You know defects happen in manufacturing, it's what warranties are supposed to be for.

  • Did happen to me while surfing but it was with a cheap knockoff strap, not the Garmin one (sort of got caught up in the leash). The Garmin strap I currently use has both of the retaining loops (not sure what you call them) wear to the point they broke off. The strap itself is worn smooth in several spots where there is was a crosshatch pattern but no where close to being so thin it would break. Mine is a Fenix 5, not Plus so a bit older and worn 24x7.

  • i recently bought a new Garmin Fenix 6x pro solar with the nylon ultrafit strap. I lost both during swimming in the sea. However the ultrafit band is advised to go with open water swimming products like the Fenix 6x pro solar.

  • Lost my one just two days ago surfing, did not even notice it. And I am not surprised, few weeks after buying it, it fell off already once. This is definitely not an adventure watch; going through other chats, I read of many people that lost it!

  • In one of the chays I read that you must replace the fast-clams by fixed straps, if you want to do sports with the watch. Otherwise, you should only use it as office watch.

Not acceptable that Garmin does not inform nor put a disclaimer. They just sell it as adventure watch, that's completely misleading
