5S on Version 20 doesn't count all steps

As the subject line says. Ever since the update to version 20.0, I've noticed that the device no longer consistently counts my steps. Switching back to a built in watch face makes no difference. A couple scenarios where I noticed this are outlined below. I know Garmin is supposed to have a 10-15 step delay before counting to eliminate false steps, but this is not the behavior my watch is exhibiting.

  • Walking around, I've noticed that I take about 25 steps before the watch starts to count, and it does not back credit me for the 25 steps. This is happening often, almost every time I start moving.
  • Several times, I've noticed extended walking does not give me any credit. Just a few minutes ago I took about 50 steps and they never showed up in my step count. After I switched from the steps screen to the watch screen and back, then it started counting (again, with the 25 step delay that does not count)

Has anyone else noticed this? I doubt it's a hardware issue, as I never saw this issue before this software update.

  • Another item I've noticed today is that frequently during periods of continuous walking the watch will stop counting steps for a bit and then resume. Typically when doing this it does count all steps, just seems odd that it would stop updating for a bit then resume again as if it thinks I have stopped walking.
