Fenix 5 plus terrible GPS accuracy

For several monthes now, my fenix 5 plus GPS accuracy is very bad.

I train on a round track 250m, while my friends who use suuntu get accurate route, I get scrambled one with unbelievable spreads.

On a 70km cycling my elevation was off by about 300m from all the other team members, most of them do not use garmin

  • Having similar issues. I am the slowest of all the Garmin devices in my group. Just switched to Galileo and every second recording instead of smart, hope that helps.

  • The Fenix offers several possibilities to measure altitude.

The best way is to use the altimeter, which measures air pressure, and manually calibrate before the activity. Set the barometer to the "altimeter" mode and set the auto-calibration to "off".

The GPS will provide 2D locations points and altimeter will provide the altitude. This will be very accurate. I am using this setting for skydiving, flying and paragliding.

Measuring altitude with GPS is not precise at all, and this is true for all GPS, even aircraft with $10k GPS.

    Good luck
