After v20.0 Software Update - Faster Battery Drain

After 20.0 update battery life is terrible. It’s the same as after upgrade 15.00.

  • I have mine since 8th of March 2018. I am pretty sure that this is a software issue. Garmin had exactly the same 2 years ago. I didn't have any battery issues until version 20.0 since the last battery issue.

  • Never had an issue with any FW and so it with this one too.

  • With stock watch face after 17.9 hours 5.2% of battery usage,  approximately 0.3%/hour. No any activities registered. Battery consumption as usual. The problem comes from the third party watch face, which Garmin v.20.0 doesn't handle correctly. There is more serious problem with v20.0 - it counts steps when you shake the watch as a cheap step tracker do, even worse. Noticed that when I pumped the the tire of my bike. It counted a step with every stroke!

That exact thing happened to me yesterday. I hit my daily step goal while pumping air into my bike tire. I wasn't moving otherwise.

  • It’s probably due to a heart rate update every second (FENIX 5X).

  • I don't think it's relevant, as heart rate was working same way in previous versions. And changing to preloaded watchface solves the issue. So, not related to heartrate

  • Exactly! With the preloaded watchface my average battery usage is 0.4% per hour, which is twice lower than with third party watchface (I'm using My Watch watchface) and the estimated battery life is ~12 days without GPS activities. The battery life with third party watchface was 5 days without GPS activities. I'm waiting for FW update or at least new beta.

If I understand this post correctly, you are acknowledging that your battery life is shorter when you use a Third Party watch face, yet you are waiting on Garmin to fix the firmware. Your research suggests that perhaps the watch face may need to be fixed. While is it true that the change might have been revealed by the Firmware update, it is also true that the firmware update, as it was in this case, updates its support for new Garmin Connect IQ (CIQ) features.

The 20.0 update included, "Brought in CIQ security updates". CIQ is a Garmin SDK made available to third party developers to develop solutions to run on these devices. Devices need to be continually update to leverage fixes and improvements in the SDK

Finally, you said that you are using My Watch Watch face, when I checked My Watch in the store, it was last updated on April 1, 2019.

I wonder if the watch face might need to be updated.

  • Well, this issue is repeating every few versions, Garmin breaks battery usage, then they fix it, then they fix a bit more and then they break it again, it's "circle of life" in Garmin, so yes, I expect that Garmin will fix it. My 3rd party watch face is GearMin and it's updated pretty frequently. So, I believe that watchface is not an issue here, as if you'll use Garmin watchface  (downloaded from store and not preloaded) you'll get same bad battery issue.
