Fenix 5 keeps changing screens during workout

When I use a pre defined workout for a run, the watch keeps changing data screens.

I'd really like to be able to glance at the watch to see how long I've got to the next stage of my workout, without fighting the watch, which insists on switching to another data screen.

Auto scroll, if that's got anything to do with it, is off.

This only happens when I'm in a workout. When I'm just logging an activity, it sticks on the main data screen and doesn't change, regardless of whether I'm running or cycling.

I did see a suggestion that the "auto climb" feature might have something to do with this, but this happens when running on completely flat roads, so I doubt the watch would think I'm climbing a steep hill.

  • I had the same on my forerunner 935, but it only happens when I choose trailrunning as activity.

I was following a gpx trail so offcourse I want to see the map screen. I was very annoyed that in constantly switched to an other screen.

I reported this to dutch garmin support but haven’t heard from them in weeks. Either they are very busy or doesn’t give a damn.

Well, to be honest. I just gave up with garmin bugs. The trailrunning activity doesn’t give any additional value over normal running, so I just ignore it.

I reported a dozen bugs, none if which garmin cared to fix.

Interesting, will try "normal" running next time and see if it behaves better :) Still, would be nice if bugs got fixed on such an expensive watch.

  • I had it. It is necessary to turn off the "climber" mode. This is in the activity settings.

  • Just be aware that Trail running activities are not used in the calculation og VO2max.

This means that if you use the normal running activity your run will be included in the VO2max calculation which might screw up the data.

OK, so even when not actually doing an ascent, the auto climbing mode prevents the watch from staying on the data screen you want. Confirmed by runnining yestereday, using Trail Run as the activity type. This time, we were actually on some trails with decent elevation changes, and the watch stayed consistenly on the workout data screen.

Happy to have it resolved, but it'd be nice if the underlying bug was resolved.

Just out of curiosity, how does a regular running activity mess with V02max data? I understand what V02max is, but not how Garmin calculates it, or how I use the information. According to the Garmin App, my fitness age is 20, which I'm quite pleased with seeing as my documented age is just over twice that ;)
